What to make? How to make it? Oh No, not the milk spilling again! You can almost imagine your mom standing with the belan. It’s a Cook-alypse in your kitchen. Sigh!
Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered! Ditch the ramen noodles and takeout. Whether you want to start cooking for yourself or if you want to aim higher and create dishes that would wow Gordon Ramsay himself. Either way, mastering these cooking basics is the perfect place to start.
EASY MEALS FOR ANXIOUS BEGINNERS
- Omelet: Omelet is every college student’s food bestie and for a good reason. You only need four ingredients: butter, eggs, cheese and salt & pepper. Once you get the hang of it, Go Wild!
- Scrambled eggs: If you mess up every time you flip the pan, here’s another egg dish for you, soft, creamy, and flavorful. You need eggs ofc, milk, butter, salt & pepper.
- Garlic naan and curry: Don’t Panic. It’s not that difficult. Take all purpose flour, mix butter/oil, spice it with garlic paste and make a dough and cook it on tawa or in the oven. You can make whatever shape with that dough as long as it tastes good. Have that naan with any curry you like! (the author is salivating)
- Cumin Rice: Now, this is an easy one. It’s also vegan and gluten-free. Bonus: You can make a big batch, store it and eat whenever you want to.
- Potato Sandwich: You would be surprised to find out that it doesn’t take a lot to make your comfort food. All you need is boiled potatoes, spices, herbs and any bread of your choice. Have it with green chutney, tomato ketchup or with steaming-hot Chai!
- Sweet and Sour potatoes: If you need to liven your taste buds, this perfect blend of sweet, spicy, and sour dish is the way to go.
- Shrimp and Mushroom Stir Fry: If you are a seafood lover, here’s the target dish for you. Cook up some rice then do a stir fry of mushroom, shrimp, and scallions in olive oil. Drizzle sauce of garlic, soy sauce, and cornstarch.
- Kimchi-fried Rice: Whether you’re an East-Asian or not, everybody loves kimchi-fried rice. The fun fact is it’s also easy to make. You just need to cut every ingredient uniformly and cook it thoroughly.
- Korean bibim guksu (Korean Spicy Cold Noodles): You can find the ingredients in the International section. With the red chili paste, sesame oil and rice vinegar, these noodles will keep you wanting more. You can also put on your favorite k-drama mukbang to keep you company, just a friend suggestion!
- Soups: If everything we listed feels like too much effort, you can always treat yourself with a healthy, hearty soup.
DON’T UNDERESTIMATE YOURSELF
Cooking might seem like a daunting task but don’t over assume it’s difficulty. It’s also not everyone’s cup of tea so whatever you are doing, you’re doing well.

Tips to keep in mind before starting your cooking journey:
- Make sure you have the essential tools and utensils.
- Gather some common ingredients, for example potatoes.
- Prep your ingredients before you start cooking. Don’t try to focus on two tasks at a time.
- Learn basic cooking techniques: Stirring, frying, sautéeing, steaming, boiling etc.
