The Student Debt Crisis: How GenZ is Fighting for Affordable Education

The Student Debt Crisis: Gen Zโ€™s Plan to Fix It Gen Z vs. Student Debt: The Fight for Fair Education Letโ€™s be realโ€”Gen Z didnโ€™t sign up for this. We were told that education is the golden ticket to a better life, instead, weโ€™re handed a mountain of debt before we even land our first job. The student debt crisis isnโ€™t just a buzzword; itโ€™s a full-blown reality for millions of young people. And guess what? Weโ€™re not staying quiet about it. The Problem: A System Designed to Keep Us Stuckย ย  The numbers are terrifying. In India, student loan debt has crossed over a โ‚น90,000 crore, growing at an annual rate of approximately 15%ย ย the average borrower burdened around โ‚น25 lakh. For Gen Z, this isnโ€™t just a financial headacheโ€” itโ€™s a crisis that could reshape the future.ย (Source: Varthana) Owning a home? Nearly impossible. Starting a family? Pushed way back. Saving for retirement? What retirement? Agree or not? Many of us are stuck paying off interest without even touching the principal. Instead of following our dreams, weโ€™re picking “safe” and feeling pressured to play by the systemโ€™s unfair rules. Itโ€™s broken. And itโ€™s time for a change. How Gen Z is Fighting Backย ย  The good news? Weโ€™re not waiting for someone else to fix it. Weโ€™re stepping up, speaking out, and taking action in powerful ways: 1. Demanding Policy Changesย ย  Gen Z is using their voice to push for real change. Weโ€™re demanding: Student debt cancellation Tuition-free college options Better repayment policies Activists and groups like the Debt Collective and Student Debt Crisis Center are leading the charge, while social media boosts our message through viral hashtags like #CancelStudentDebt and #EducationForAll. 2. Exploring Alternative Paths Not everyone is following the traditional four-year college route. Many GenZers are opting for community colleges, trade schools, or online courses to avoid massive debt. Platforms like Coursera, Skillshare, and even YouTube are becoming go-to resources for affordable, skill-based learning. 3. Taking Control of Our Financesย ย  Weโ€™re educating ourselves about student loans, interest rates, and repayment strategies.ย ย Instagram, and YouTube are full of creators breaking down financial topics in ways we can actually understand. 4. Strength in Numbers: Community Supportย ย  This struggle is not just personal, itโ€™s shared. We see friends and family sinking in student debt, and we know we canโ€™t fight this alone. Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re coming together, supporting each other, and making our voices louder. Weโ€™re building strong support systemsโ€”helping each other navigate loans, find scholarships, and stay motivated. Weโ€™re raising funds for those in needโ€”crowdfunding tuition fees and ensuring no one is left behind. Weโ€™re taking to the streets and the internetโ€”protesting unfair policies, signing petitions, and demanding real change. When we stand together, we are unstoppable. The more we unite, the harder it is for those in power to ignore us. Whatโ€™s Next?ย ย  This fight isnโ€™t over. But one thing is clear: Gen Z isnโ€™t just sitting on the sidelines. Weโ€™re rewriting the rules, challenging outdated systems, and proving that education should be a right, not a privilege. If youโ€™re feeling overwhelmed by student debt, remember: youโ€™re not alone. Your voice matters. Our collective action is already making waves, and together, we can push for a future where education doesnโ€™t come with a lifetime of debt. Breaking the Binaryโ€“Gender Beyond the Labelsย

Rethinking Gender: Getting Fluid With Identities.ย  From an early age, society teaches us to categorize everything, from objects to people, into neat boxes. While this approach can help children make sense of the world, applying it to individuals is not only limiting but also reductive. Itโ€™s like viewing the world in black and white, leaving no space for the grays of human experience. When we label a woman as ‘the nurturer’ and a man as ‘the protector,’ we not only confine them to these rigid roles, but we also fail to recognize that individuals of any gender have the capacity to embody both, or either, of these qualities. Before diving into the concept of non-binary or the idea of a third gender, let’s first take a moment to understand some important terms and concepts: Gender refers to the social roles and behaviors that society associates with being male, female, or something else. It’s a spectrum, with identities beyond just “man” or “woman.” Sex is the biological characteristics, such as chromosomes, hormones, and reproductive anatomy. Itโ€™s also not binary and may or may not align with gender identity. Sexual orientation is about who someone is emotionally or romantically attracted to, and itโ€™s separate from gender identity. Gender identity is a personโ€™s deeply felt sense of their own gender, which can be fluid or fixed and may be male, female, both, neither, or something else. Gender expression is how a person outwardly expresses their gender through appearance, behavior, clothing, and other traits. It may differ from their gender identity and can change over time. The gender binary is the outdated concept that there are only two genders: male and female, typically linked to biological sex. The traditional Binary structure, or the pink and blue box of gender identity, does not account for individuals who do not feel or identify as male or female. What does being non-binary mean? Being non-binary means that a person’s gender identity doesnโ€™t fit within the traditional categories of “male” or “female.โ€It’s a personal term, as in, how someone experiences or expresses their non-binary identity can vary from person to person. Non-binary/trans individuals sometimes use a number of other terms to describe their gender: agender, genderfluid, genderqueer, gender-nonconforming, demigirl/boy, and the list goes on. Is this a western concept? Absolutely Not. History of Gender Nonconformity While the idea that gender isnโ€™t binary may seem new to many people, gender non-conformity has always existed in different communities throughout the world. For example, hijras of South Asia, some Native American cultures in the U.S. and Canada have the term โ€œtwo-spiritโ€ to refer to gender non-conforming members, Indonesiaโ€™s waria community dates back to the early 19th century, the mฤhลซ of Hawaii, and this is not an exhaustive list. Cleopatra TataBele, a two-spirit AfroTaino artist and content creator. Laxmi Narayan Tripathi, transgender/Hijra rights activist and Bollywood actor However, discrimination against these groups has occurred as long as their existence has. It is thanks to transgender icons such as Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera that so much conversation around demands for equality from LGBTQ populations has emerged in the US and subsequently, the whole world. Why Inclusivity is Important Inclusivity means being mindful of others’ identities, using the correct pronouns, standing as an ally, and actively opposing harmful policies like anti-trans bills. With celebrities like Amandla Stenberg and Demi Lovato, the millennial and Gen Z populations have come to embrace the idea of gender non-conformity, but there’s still a long way to go to realize this acceptance on a judicial level. What’s crucial is that, whether we’re queer or non-queer, we create a society where everyone feels free to express themselves fully and safely.ย  WHAT CTRL+Z SUGGESTS In a world where Glorified gender reveals often reinforce the binary concept and where places like America recognize only two gendersโ€”male and femaleโ€”queer individuals are more vulnerable than ever. It’s our responsibility to create safe spaces for them and hold accountable those who don’t. As allies, we can amplify non-binary voices, educate ourselves about gender diversity, and call out transphobia when we see itโ€”whether itโ€™s in a podcast, a meme, or a comment. Every step counts in making the world more inclusive. Conscious Consumerism โ€“ What It Actually Meansย

A Guide to Mindful Consumption: Be the change.ย  In a capitalist world of hyper-consumerism, Conscious consumerism can be understood as an eco-movement first and later as a way of life. Does it mean that what we buy matters? Well, yes but Conscious consumption is not just about what products we buy, but it is all encompassing- an entire mindset that takes into account what you are buying, why you are buying it, when it will expire and its method of disposal. Itโ€™s about prioritizing quality over quantity. It’s an answer to the hows and whys of our materialistic lives. ย Why should we care?ย  We get it. The appeal of festival sales and fast fashion clothes is a sure way to impulsively buy things we don’t need but (Oh, the dreaded but) it is our responsibility to re-evaluate our choices that affect our surroundings. The throwaway culture of TikTok that enticingly promotes you Stanley Cups has actually put a heavy toll on our planet. So, tell me, are you gonna get those boots or? The question to ponder over is whether we are moving in the right direction if we are letting our buying choices get affected by celebrity endorsements or if we are letting faux leather trends or fake organic brands fool us. Our role as consumers is not only limited to demanding paper bills, but it is also an influential force of transformation. ย How can we practice Mindful Consumption ย  It is a myth that only privileged people can buy sustainable products. Even if that idea holds a certain amount of truth, there are other ways to practice mindful engagement with our materialistic pursuits. Sustainable living is all about โ€œsomething is better than nothingโ€ because small changes matter. Here are a few habits to adopt today: Donate, recycle, or up-cycle. Say yes to thrifting, buy second hand instead of brand new. Support small, local businesses. Fight the impulsive buying demon inside you. You wouldn’t like it if your date was peacocking, so flexing yourself is hypocritical, isn’t it? Live for yourself, not for society. A community- driven, conscious consumerism is a catalyst for change; A change that the world needs right now. ย  Eco Era,Woke Vibes About the Author Sneha A young writer that writes about things that matter most- identity, family, adulting, digital life (or the lack of it). Gen Z and the Election โ€“ Why Our Vote Matters.

We Run the Internetโ€”Letโ€™s Run the Electionย  Hey friends, letโ€™s talk. We’re the new adultsย soย our participation in elections truly matters. Our absence at the polls lets others pick our futureโ€” the worst decision ever. Weโ€™re the Game Changers We helped TikTok reach millions of users, made the Y2K fashion trend again, and stood up against celebrities who crossed the line. Our power to transform internet trends can also transform how elections work. Don’t believe that your vote doesn’t have any value. Wrong. When most students don’t do their part on group projects, everyone ends up with poor resultsโ€”this is what happens in elections, too. Every student has been part of a group project where only one person actually did the work. We must step up now for our own future. The data is clear: Gen Z now makes up one of the biggest voting populations. We can control the next steps because of our numbers. The choices we make at the polls will determine our planet’s health, how we get an education, and whether everyone gets fair treatment. Your Vote Matters Think for yourself. When we young people don’t vote, our older generations make decisions about our future. Do we really want people who make silly mistakes with technology to decide what’s best for us? Let’s make sure our voices are heard by voting! Don’t Make Excuses Like What can you do? 1) Register to vote. Itโ€™s easy. Do it now. Seriously. 2) Learn about the candidates. You only need basic political knowledge to see which candidates back the issues you’re passionate about. 3) Make a plan to vote. Vote as soon as possible, whether ahead of time, through the mail, or when election day arrivesโ€”make sure you participate. 4) Hype your friends. We can use the same enthusiasm people show for pumpkin spice lattes to get them fired up about voting. 5) Use social media for good. Share helpful voting info, send reminder messages, and correct false facts. We can share voting details as powerfully as we share popular internet memes. Final thoughts We have powerโ€”letโ€™s use it. Our participation in elections determines the direction we take together. We need to participate and take action to create a future that benefits us. So, bestie, letโ€™s do this. The Earth will appreciate your action one day. We need to take action to make our democracy work properly. ย  No Comments The Real Spill,Woke Vibes About the Author Shaik Noushed I’m Noushed.
