Mixing Art and Activismย

How Protest Art Drives Social Changeย ย  Art has long been a tool for resistance from the graffiti of Banksy in Palestine, the protest poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz to Picassoโ€™s Guernica, it is a powerful medium for expressing dissent, raising awareness, and inspiring change. The Segregation Wall In recent years, this intersection has given rise to a distinct movement, โ€œArtivismโ€= art + activism. Artivism uses creative and artistic methods of self-expression to denounce, cultivate awareness, and motivate change in society. Although various forms of artistic expression have long been used as forms of protest, the concept of artivism began to take shape in the early 2000s drawing inspiration from 20th century art forms like graffiti, situationism, and urban art. Protest Art has manifested itself in various forms throughout history, from classic paintings to modern-day murals. Let’s take a look at how artists throughout time have used their work to challenge social and political norms. Examples of Media Used as Protest Following are some of the artworks that tell the story of their times: 1. The Scream by Edvard Munch (1893): expressionistic piece based on Munch’s actual experience of a panic attack depicting the universal existential dread of the modern man in the late 19th century. credit photo: www.edvardmunch.org 2. Guernica by Pablo Picasso: An anti-war piece painted as an immediate reaction to the Nazi’s devastating casual bombing practice on the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. credit photo: www.pablopicasso.org 3. Jacob Lawrence, Soldiers and Students, 1962: In his painting, Lawrence artfully portrays the fear and outrage many felt during the desegregation of schools throughout the United States of America during the civil rights era. 4. Dandi March (Watercolour Painting by Nandalal Bose): This painting represents Mahatma Gandhi in the foreground and in the back are shown the seventy-nine people who marched alongside him during the Dandi March. 5. Mural for Gaza in Nairobi, Kenya: In March 2024, a group of artists in Kenya painted a mural showing resistance against the ongoing Genocide in Gaza. 6. โ€˜Untouchable with Dead Cow II’ by Savinder Sawarkar: The untouchable carrying the dead cow slung on his shoulders reveals the enormous weight of institutionalized Hinduism and is a powerful commentary on caste system. 7. Anti-Asian Hate Protest Art: Amanda Phingbodhipakkiyaโ€™s โ€œI Still Believe In Our Cityโ€ public art series, created in partnership with the NYC Commission on Human Rights, portrayed the rightful claim asian-americans had on their land. Does Art Really Change the World We Live In? Art speaks to us in a way that it can inspire real action and provoke dialogue about pressing issues such as poverty, racism, casteism and gender inequality with its powerful visuals. Whether it’s photography, sculpture, painting or mixed media, art as protest is cathartic and empowering for both artists and audiences. In fact, Street Art like murals and graffiti are potent forms of grassroots activism and have become symbols of resistance and social commentary.ย ย  CTRL+Z TAKEAWAYS Art is not just limited to traditional galleries or museums and it doesnโ€™t just exist for aesthetics or beauty, but also has a much deeper purpose. We believe that contemporary art has the power to end modern problems like gender inequality, racism, queerphobia and xenophobia etc. In a dark world that seems divided on everything, art is our shared humanity built on values of empathy and compassion. What type of art speaks to you? How can you use your gift to help drive change in society? These artists have shown us the way we can own our truth and demand for a better world. AI Art โ€“ Why Itโ€™s Blowing Up?ย

The End Of Creativity or A New Medium? From engineers asking ChatGPT to write their code, designers relying on Canva AI to fill their PowerPoints with images, and students copying their homework from Meta AI, it is near impossible to find any digital space where AI hasn’t strayed into. The art world is no different. No longer is the credibility and excellence of art measured by the refinement of your brush strokes or logging hours in the studioโ€” it is judged by who comes up with a cooler concept. It is undeniable that AI art has reduced the gap between artists and non-artists with ideas for art. But here’s the thingโ€”what are the rules for AI art to be considered real ‘artโ€™? Is art only an idea, or does the execution matter? Is it harming the artist community or giving them newer mediums? Let’s dig deeper. AI ART BOOM Before 2022, it wasn’t wrong to think that creative work would always be the forte of humans, but now we might reconsider. ย In the last few years, the art world got a major upgrade, courtesy of AI. We were suddenly offered the possibility of anyone creating stunning art with just a few keyboard taps. We’re talking illustrations, photographs, paintingsโ€”the whole shebang.ย  Fast forward a few months, and the quality of these AI-generated images has gone from “meh” to “mind-blowing.” Even commercial artists are dipping their toes in the AI waters, with some embracing the tech and others giving it the side-eye.ย  It’s like the art world’s own version of the Matrixโ€”we’re not sure what’s real and what’s AI-generated. But one thing’s for sure: the future of art hangs on a fragile balance.ย  Using generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Imagine Art, people can type a request into a browser in the language they know and get back whatever they asked forโ€”be that a recipe, an illustration, or even a fake photo or video.ย  THE ETHICS OF AI ART: A Sticky Situationย  So, AI art is all the rage, and it’s easy to see why. But, despite its many benefits, it’s also sparking some major debate. What’s the big deal? The answer is simple: AI art isn’t exactly “drawn” in the classical sense. Instead, it’s trained and remixed from existing copyrighted works by artists, illustrators, and photographers who often don’t get the creditโ€”or compensationโ€”they deserve. A timely example of this controversy is the recent trend of reimagining situations in Ghibli-style animation. Though it is ironical what with co-founder Hayao Miyazaki viewing AI art as an ‘insult to life itself.’ History’s shown us that new, groundbreaking things are often met with resistance at first, only to become widely accepted (and even celebrated) later on. Will AI art follow the same path? That remains to be seen. THE HUMAN ELEMENTย  One question that’s on everyone’s mind: Is art uniquely human? There are two sides here. Some argue that generative AI is basically a vampire, sucking the life out of original artists’ work and putting them out of a job. Others believe that creating AI art is a creative process in itselfโ€”after all, our brains work on patterns and data too.ย ย ย  Say No to AI Art by Emme2589 on DeviantArt However you define art or an artist, one thing’s for sure: AI algorithms and machines are causing irreversible impact on the art world. CTRL+Z TAKEAWAYS: The AI Dilemmaโ€”Blend In or Get Left Out? The AI enthusiasts have been loud and clear: if you don’t hop on the AI bandwagon, you’ll be left in the dust. But not everyone’s convinced. Some are openly resistant to AI art, while others are still weighing their options. As we navigate this tech-filled world, it’s important to consider the ripple effect of our actions. Are we harming someone or some group, even if we don’t mean to? It’s a tricky question, and one that requires some serious thought. So, where do you stand: With Artists or with AI? Or do you think they’re not mutually exclusive? Photography On Your Phoneย

Pro Tips for stunning shotsย  Phone cameras have become essential tools for capturing life’s moments, from mirror selfies and stunning sunsets to candid shots with friends. Mobile photography is a significant part of Gen-Z life, and having a high-quality camera at your fingertips is incredibly convenient. But what if you could enhance your shots and make them look even more impressive? No need for a fancy DSLR; just a few clever hacks, and you’ll be snapping stunning photos in no time. 1. Clean Your Lens (Yes, Seriously!)ย ย  Sounds basic, right? But youโ€™d be surprised how much dust, smudges, and fingerprints can ruin a perfectly good shot. A quick wipe with a soft cloth can instantly improve clarity and sharpness. 2. Find the Best Lightingย ย  Lighting is everything in photography. Natural light, especially during the golden hour (just after sunrise or before sunset), gives your photos a warm, dreamy glow. If youโ€™re indoors, try to face a window for soft, flattering light. Harsh overhead lighting? No thanks. 3. Rule of Thirds = Instant Upgrade Most phone cameras have a grid optionโ€”turn it on! The rule of thirds helps balance your composition by placing key elements at the intersection of the grid lines. Your photos will instantly look more professional and visually appealing. 4. Play with Perspectivesย ย  Instead of always shooting from eye level, switch it up. Try shooting from a lower angle for a powerful, dramatic effect or from above for a clean, flat-lay aesthetic. Experiment with angles to make everyday scenes look extraordinary. 5. Focus & Adjust Exposure Manuallyย ย  Tap on your subject to focus and hold down to lock it. You can also slide your finger up or down to adjust brightness (exposure) instead of relying on automatic settings. This gives you more control over the final look. 6. Optimize Camera Settingsย ย  Your phone camera has hidden gems in its settings that can elevate your photography. Switch to HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode for better-balanced lighting, especially in high-contrast scenes. Use Pro mode (if available) to tweak ISO manually, shutter speed, and white balance for maximum control. Adjust the resolution and frame rate for sharper images and smoother videos. 7. Edit Like a Proย ย  Raw photos are just the beginning. Apps like Lightroom, VSCO, and Snapseed can take your shots to the next level. Adjust brightness, contrast, and saturation to make your images pop while keeping them natural. Just donโ€™t overdo itโ€”nobody likes an over-filtered pic. 8. Ditch the Zoom, Get Closerย ย  Digital zoom lowers image quality, making photos look grainy and pixelated. Instead of zooming in, move closer to your subject for sharper, more detailed shots. 9. Capture Motion with Burst Modeย ย  Whether youโ€™re photographing a friend mid-jump or a pet in action, burst mode (holding down the shutter button) is your best friend. It takes multiple shots in seconds, letting you pick the best one. 10. Background Mattersย ย  A cluttered background can ruin an otherwise great photo. Look for clean, minimalistic backgrounds or use portrait mode to create a blurred (bokeh) effect that keeps the focus on your subject. 11. Experiment with Night Modeย ย  Low-light photography used to be a struggle, but phone cameras now have powerful night modes. Use it to capture stunning shots in dim lighting without the harshness of a flash. CTRL+Z Takeaways You donโ€™t need expensive gear to take breathtaking photosโ€”just your phone and a little creativity. With these tips, you can capture scroll-stopping shots that make people wonder if you hired a pro. So go out, experiment, and most importantlyโ€”have fun with it!
